Our factories and the environment
In order to give you a better idea of how environmentally sound production techniques are used during the OSRAM production process, the Projects division has collected a number of case studies.
Augsburg glassworks
OSRAM manufactures over 90% of the glass used for lamp production at its own facilities. The glass is manufactured by heating sand, soda and potash to temperatures exceeding 1,550° C. These high temperatures are achieved by burning natural gas.

Schwabmünchen plant
Fluorescent substances are able to convert ultraviolet radiation into visible light. The plant in Schwabmünchen manufactures calcium phosphate fluorescents for standard fluorescent lamps and LUMILUX fluorescents for DULUX and LUMILUX lamps.

Augsburg plant
Fluorescent lamps are low-pressure discharge lamps that contain mercury. The goal of our products and production is to use as little mercury as possible.

Molsheim lamp plant
At the Molsheim plant, the main OSRAM European facility for lamp production, over 1 million lamps are packed according to customer specifications every day. The amount of packaging used should be reduced to the absolute minimum.

Bruntál plant
Before a filament emits light, it is subjected to a harsh acid bath and cleansed with large quantities of water during the production process. OSRAM has found a way to recycle the rinsing water along with the substances it contains. This is a pioneering breakthrough in environmental protection that also reduces costs.

Foshan plant
OSRAM seeks to minimize the environmental impact of our production processes with a multitude of measures. At our plant in Foshan, China, a focus was put on the mercury content of fluorescent lamps and the waste produced by the plant.

Sonepat plant
OSRAM purchased the Sonepat plant in India in 1998, taking over a company focused on the local market, with corresponding environmental challenges.
